Five Celebs Convicted of Tax Evasion

Nobody is exempt from paying their taxes, not even famous celebrities. There are many celebrities that have thought they were above the law, had enough money to pay off the right people, or some who just claim they hired bad accountants or managers. Regardless, many celebrities have been convicted of tax evasion, and here are just five.

Nicolas Cage

A well-known actor from around the world, Nicolas Cage is one of the biggest stars to be done for tax evasion. In 2009, the actor that has ironically played in The National Treasure accrued a debt of around $6 million. The star blamed these errors on his accountant and former manager whom made risky investment choices in real estate and failed to pay taxes. Cage had to pay a large chunk of fines to the IRS and his story goes to show, you should always check your taxes.

Lauryn Hill

This singer and rapper, most famous for her time in The Fugees, spent three months in prison due to the fact that she didn’t pay her taxes of around 1 million dollars over ten years. She was found guilty in 2012 and admitted to not paying for earnings from her music between 2005-2007. Her punishment did not stop there, and after prison she was on probation for a year and suffered with three months of house arrest.

Dolce and Gabbana

Although these famous fashion icons were entangled in a mess of tax evasions, in 2014 their conviction was later overturned. They failed to file tax returns in 2013 for their company based in Italy. There was not enough proof to find these two guilty, so a judgement could never be made. Make sure you have done your tax return before the deadline to avoid the same fate as these two.

H. Ty Warner

This man, most famous for being the creator of the children’s toys “Beanie Babies”, pled guilty to tax evasion in 2013. Warner has avoided tax for a long time according to sources, with him not reporting income from his Swiss bank account for years. According to the IRS, he failed to report at least $24 million of interest coming from this account and therefore avoided between $5-$6 million in taxes. No matter where you try to hide your money, it will catch up with you.

Sophia Loren

This Italian actress was convicted for not paying her tax return and served 17 days in prison. Unfortunately, Sophia was wrongly accused and was later found to be paying her taxes just fine. An apology was issued to the actress, but this would not give her 17 days back. Just goes to show, the IRS is not always right!

These are just a few of the famous names that have been convicted of tax evasion, whether guilty or not. Not paying your tax properly can end up getting you in more trouble and in more debt. No matter who you are, taxes are there for a reason and cannot be evaded.
