Colors and Flowers… and Soviet Spoils

Two weeks ago, shortly after the political upheaval erupted in Kyrgyzstan, I received an email from my journalist friend in Azerbaijan, Anar Orujov, who is deputy director of ICFJ (International Center for Journalists) in Baku, wanting to engage in a discussion about the problems of democracy in post Soviet countries, including Azerbaijan.

Diversity dead-end: Inclusiveness without accountability

sexism_racism_homophobiaAfter a recent talk on racism and other illegitimate hierarchies at a diversity conference in Dallas, I received a letter from one of the people who had attended that asked “why you feel it necessary to perpetuate and even exacerbate the divisiveness of language when addressing a group of people assembled to learn how to live better together and be more accepting of differences?” He suggested that by being so sharply critical, I was part of the problem not the solution.

The Untapped Power of Arabia

Arab summitArab leaders have so far failed to protect their people, their countries, their own interests and their holy places. While dedicating their 22nd summit meeting in March 2010 to Al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the Al-Aqsa Mosque (their 2nd holiest place), they allotted only $500 million to support Palestinian Jerusalemites. Although this is an increase over the previous $150 million, it is trivial compared to the $14 billion that Israel is spending on Judaizing the city and destroying all its Arabic characteristics.

Next Supreme Court Justice to Solidify Right Wing, Neoliberal Control

US Supreme Court JusticesOn April 9, Justice John Paul Stevens delivered a letter to President Obama stating:

"Having concluded that it would be in the best interests of the Court to have my successor appointed and confirmed well in advance of the commencement of the Court's next Term, I shall retire from regular active service as an Associate Justice."

Alarming Racism in Israel

occupationMossawa means equality, the Mossawa Advocacy Center promoting it for Israel's Arab citizens - about 1.5 million, comprising 20% of the population. Established in 1997, it "strives to improve the social, economic and political status of (Israeli Arabs), while preserving their national and cultural rights as Palestinians." It also promotes gender equality "in all spheres of society."
