Remembering Howard Zinn (1922 - 2010)

Distinguished scholar, author, political scientist, people's historian, activist, and son of blue-collar immigrant parents, Zinn was born on August 24, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York and died in Santa Monica, CA of a reported heart attack while swimming on January 27. He's survived by two children, Myla Kabat-Zinn and Jeff Zinn, and five grandchildren.

Surviving in the Tough Times Ahead

Ian Sample's "Billions face food shortages, study warns" [1], based on findings by researchers at Washington and Stanford Universities, points out some of the progressively difficult conditions that will likely lead to widespread starvation in times ahead. Its conclusions fit well with ones posed in Paul Chefurka's "World Energy and Population Trends to 2100" and "Peak Oil, Carrying Capacity and Overshoot: Population, the Elephant in the Room" [2].

Book Review: 'Death’s Dream Kingdom. The American psyche since 9-11'

CHEMISTS have a relative straightforward world in which they have the basic elements (such as hydrogen, oxygen, carbon etc), each atom having a compact nucleus variously composed of similar-mass protons (positively charged) and neutrons (uncharged) surrounded by a negatively charged  electron cloud. Following certain “rules”, atoms “combine” by sharing their electrons to form “covalent bonds”. Thus a single hydrogen atom (H) is much “happier” in a diatomic molecule H-H (H2) and ditto oxygen (O) in O-O (O2).

Haiti's Earthquake: Natural or Engineered

Human activity can cause destructive harm. Columbia University geophysical hazards research scientist, Christian Klose, studies how, including from mining. In a recent paper, he said:

"mining activities disturb the in-situ stress in the upper continental crust and can trigger earthquakes (human-triggered seismicity)."
